Lankov on the NK-Chinese Border
A great article on the dynamics of the North Korea-Chinese border region. A great lesson in relativity. A few things remain constant, that people are drawn to prosperity and they will vote with their feet if given the chance.
Lankov discusses the level of corruption in North Korea that would make the Chinese blush. Last week, my professor made the argument that corruption is a good thing. I was skeptical but now I understand his argument. For those of you who frown on all forms of corruption, would you rather these North Korean official serve their own interests or the ideology of Kin Jong-Il.
For refugees, the corruption of North Korean and Chinese authorities is probably their greatest advantage.
