COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Denmark’s foreign ministry said Wednesday that four North Koreans who sought refuge in the Danish embassy in Vietnam were hoping to get to South Korea.

Three women and one man entered the compound of the Danish embassy on Wednesday morning in what activists called an apparent bid for asylum.

“They are not looking for asylum in Denmark, they want to go to South Korea,” the ministry’s consular section chief, Lars Thuesen, told AFP.

Danish diplomats questioning the refugees had also established that the four had no valid papers.

They would be put in contact with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Thuesen said.

Danish officials said earlier that North Korean refugees have in the past turned up at Western embassies in Vietnam in a bid to get to South Korea.

Vietnam used to be the major destination for refugees before Thailand, the most famous defection involve the airlift of 468 refugees in 2004. Afterwards, however, Vietnam has since tightened its borders. Like China, it is a Communist country seeking foreign investment. So South Korea and to the extent the US have a bit of clout in regards to refugees ending up in Vietnam. It will be interesting to see if more will follow. Hopefully, Vietnam will not become another Thailand, but that is hard to tell.
