Coming to America III
12 refugees have already arrived in the US, according to Chun Ki-won
SEOUL, South Korea: Twelve North Korean refugees have arrived in the United States to seek asylum, a South Korean activist said Thursday. It is the largest group from the communist nation to have recently defected to the U.S.
The defections come at a sensitive time as the United States and North Korea are to embark next week on reconciliation talks in New York that could lead to formal diplomatic relations between the longtime enemies. The meeting is part of measures outlined in a Feb. 13 agreement in which North Korea pledged to take initial steps to dismantle its nuclear weapons program.
Chun Ki-won, director of the South Korea-based Durihana Mission group that has previously arranged North Koreans’ travel to the U.S., said the latest arrivals brought to 30 the number of North Koreans who have sought refuge in the U.S. under a 2004 law.
He said the refugees arrived Wednesday night, but declined to give their exact location due to the issue’s sensitivity. Chun said the North Koreans had departed from an unnamed Southeast Asian country.
I’m guessing it’s one of the many large groups from Thailand. Still, I hope they find America to their liking. After all, in America, if you’re tired of hanging around Korean people all the time, just take a drive.
