SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea condemned the Japanese government on Monday for its treatment of Korean residents in Japan, calling it an unpardonable infringement of North Korean sovereignty and a crime against humanity.
The harshly worded attack was a sign of continuing tensions between the two countries, despite their participation less than a week earlier in an agreement on shutting down the North’s main nuclear reactor.
“The servicepersons and people of (North Korea) will never remain a passive onlooker to the Japanese authorities’ outrageous suppression of Chongryon and Koreans in Japan,” the North Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Tokyo has been cracking down on the activities of Chongryon, the residents’ group for North Koreans living in Japan, amid concerns it may have a role in North Korea’s nuclear and chemical weapons programs.
“This brutal political suppression of Chongryon, a legitimate organization of overseas citizens of dignified (North Korea), and Koreans in Japan, members of the Korean nation, is an unpardonable infringement upon the sovereignty of our country and an unprecedented crime against humanity,” the Foreign Ministry statement said.
Takes one to know one, right?
Update: Now, it’s accusing the US of interfering with the South Korean presidential election. This would be the same country that threatened war if the GNP were voted into power.
