Two Seek Asylum in Shenyang
That’s embarassing (Via. TKL)
SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Yonhap) — Two North Korean defectors, who were staying at a South Korean consulate in China, climbed into a nearby U.S. diplomatic mission to apparently seek asylum early this month, diplomatic sources said Tuesday.
The two, whose identities weren’t immediately available, entered the U.S. Consulate in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang after scaling a wall separating the U.S. compound and the South Korean consulate, said sources in South Korea and China.
South Korean and U.S. officials have been discussing how to handle the case, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The two defectors, if sent to the U.S., would be the third group of North Korean asylum seekers accepted by Washington, since U.S. President George W. Bush signed the North Korean Human Rights Act in 2004.
This is not the first time refugees decided to prefer living in the US instead.
Update: Waaaay more info on the seven in Thailand in TKL. Very tragic.
